Appearing in Court: What You Need to Know

Navigating a court appearance can be stressful. Whether you are appearing in person or virtually, it helps to have an attorney to guide you through the process.

How to Appear in Court

• In-Person: I recommend appearing in person. This helps the Judge and prosecutor to see you as an individual, rather than just a name on a docket and a case number. If you are appearing in person, we will meet at the courthouse prior to your hearing to go over any last minute questions.

• Webex Video: This is the preferred remote appearance method. Here is what I recommend to clients. First, confirm that the Judge has permitted you to appear remotely. Second, download the Cisco Webex App to your device. Third, test this technology in advance. Double check that your microphone, speaker, camera, and appearance are set to go. Finally, connect at least 10 minutes early. You must enter your full legal name and email address when prompted on the Webex app. Be sure to unmute and identify yourself when the Judge directs you. Otherwise, you may not be admitted. Sometimes court is slow and the Judge is running behind schedule, so be patient if you are stuck in the waiting room. Keep your device muted until your case is called. Contact your attorney with any questions about this process.
