Appearing in Court: What You Need to Know

Navigating a court appearance can be stressful. Whether you are appearing in person or virtually, it helps to have an attorney to guide you through the process.

How to Appear in Court

• In-Person: If you are able, I recommend appearing in person. This helps the Judge and prosecutor to see you as a person, rather than just a case number. If I am your attorney, we will meet at the courthouse prior to your hearing to settle your nerves and go over any last minute questions.

• Webex Video: This is the current remote appearance method in most Colorado courts. Here is what I recommend to clients:

  • First, confirm that the Judge has permitted you to appear remotely. This can require a motion from a lawyer and a formal order.

  • Second, download the Cisco Webex App to your device.

  • Third, test the technology in advance.

    • Double check that your microphone, speaker, camera, and appearance work well.

  • Finally, connect at least 10 minutes early.

  • Note: You must enter your full legal name and information when prompted on the Webex app. Then, you must unmute and identify yourself when the Judge directs you. Otherwise, you may be rejected from the virtual courtroom. Also, sometimes court is slow and the Judge is running behind schedule, so be patient if you are stuck in the waiting room. Keep your device muted until your case is called. Contact your attorney for help with this process.

• Telephone: If you are permitted to appear remotely and also not ordered to appear by video, you can dial (720) 650-7664 and enter the courtroom’s specific access code.
